What is Underwater Welding and Why is It Important?

By Colin Connor26 March 20212 min read

One of the unique jobs of a commercial diver is performing underwater welding tasks to maintain ship’s seaworthiness. No matter the ocean’s conditions, these divers can get the job done! As the name suggests, underwater welding is welding underwater. But, if you know how to weld on land, it doesn’t mean you’d be great at underwater welding. From the method to importance, here’s everything you need to know about underwater welding.

How Is Underwater Welding Done?

Invented in the early 1930s, underwater welding is still used to maintain and repair marine structures. Welding is the process of using extreme heat to join two structures together. When it comes to underwater welding, this process might seem surprising, considering that electricity and water are a dangerous combination. And we all know that water puts out fire, so how exactly is this done?

Wet welding is a technique that uses an electrode containing an anode (positively charged), cathode (negatively charged), and an electrolyte (sea water). These opposing charges allow the electrons to travel from the cathode to the anode, and the positive ions make their way through the electrolyte and to the cathode, emitted the weldment where desired. The mass movement of these particles generates energy and heat of up to over 5,000 degrees Celsius. The arc that comes out of the end of the electrode is protected by a gaseous bubble, which creates a waterproof environment and allows divers to weld surfaces together.

The Importance of Underwater Welding

Underwater welding is excellent in case of emergency repairs. Although hiring an underwater welder can be costly due to the danger associated with the job, this is a cheaper option than removing the affected part, mending it on land, and then reinstalling it again. This is a quick and more suitable method for big vessels like commercial ships.

The professional will be able to access all parts of the ship that might not even be accessible on land. The best part is there’s no time wastage in dry-docking. The welder can perform the task on-site while the vessel is submerged in the water.
